INTRODUCTION
The
military history of the land forces of the
Levies
of the Crown and its vassals plus occasional former mercenary troops long in
service to Evendarr - make up the majority of the Royal Armed Forces of
Evendarr. Quartered on either Crown
holdings or on Royal bases and posts throughout the Kingdom, they consist of
both standing forces and conscripts called into service as the need may
arise. A summary of current Evendarrian
military strength will be listed at the end of this history.
The
naval history of the Kingdom of Evendarr is far more recent because of two
factors:
1)
At its beginning, the newly formed Kingdom of Evendarr had a minimal seacoast,
largely cut off from the remainder of the Realm by the Ash Mountains. Beyond the fairly chronic menace of pirates
and sea monsters, few threats from that quarter existed for most of the
population.
2)
Coastal defense was perceived as a Duchy, County or Baronial responsibility,
usually carried out in concert with the more powerful trader clans and merchant
associations along the Great Northern Ocean and the Middle Sea. Since these groups reaped most of the
benefits of secure ocean trade routes, it was deemed only fitting that they
shoulder the expenses as well.
All
of this was to change during the Delphine War of YR
500-501. King Lawrance
II was accidentally Obliterated in a backlash during a Formal Magic Spell, and
the war ended. King Lawrance’s successor, Queen
Lorelei I, responded to the petitions of her coastal vassals, and the Royal
Navy of Evendarr was founded in YR 503.
It is headquartered at Braughm-Raor, the capital city of the County of
Blackstone and the largest port in Evendarr.
II. EARLY
POLITICS & MILITARY ORGANIZATION
The
signing of the Union Treaty of Velowyn in YR 1 united four Realms: The Kingdom
of Sardonia, the Principalities of Endarr and Nevis, and the Grand Duchy of
Greymoor. These four founding Realms became Baronies of the New Kingdom. Each of the Founders renounced claim to all
prior holdings, remanding them to the Crown.
In exchange, each Founder received a Royal title and demesnes from the
Crown of Evendarr and Manorial Rights in the capital city of Cwyll. Then there was Lord Regis Buttons who was Chancellor
of Endarr, and became Chancellor of Evendarr.
At
the Signing of the Treaty of Velowyn, The positions of authority were altered
as follows:
OLD NEW
Sir Berthold Endarr - Prince of Endarr King
of Evendarr
Dame Merriel Monay
- Queen of Sardonia Queen
of Evendarr
Lord Regis Buttons
- Chancellor of Endarr Lord
Chancellor of Evendarr
Sir Aylward
Huntington - Archduke of Greymoor Knight of Evendarr, Viscount of Cwyll
Dame Winfred
Bartholomew - Princess of Nevis Knight of Evendarr, Knight Commander, Royal
Army of
Evendarr
With
one exception, all of the troops loyal to the Five Old Families were
consolidated under King Berthold's command, and were called the King's Own
Regiments, numbering four in total.
After the King's assassination during his first year of rule, they swore
fealty to the Crown itself. They were
placed under the command of Dame Winfred Bartholomew, Knight Commander of the
Royal Army, except during those times when Queen Merriel herself took the field.
They are now commanded by many, and are most loyal to those who are loyal to
the King of Evendarr, they arte called the Kings Own,
or the Kings instruments.
The
exception was the Sardonian Watch, which consisted of three regiments combining
armored knights and horse archers. These
units had sworn oaths of personal fealty to the Monay family during its
struggle to wrest control of Sardonia from the evils of Vincent deSardon a half-century earlier. The Watch continued to serve as Queen Merriel
Monay's personal troops until her Final Death in YR 6. At that point, the 1st and 2nd Watch entered
service to Viscount Aylward Huntington of Cwyll, who was charged with the defense of the old Capital
City of Evendarr. They have remained in Cwyll ever
since as the Capital Watch. The 3rd
Sardonian Watch swore directly to the Crown, and joined the King's Own, as
Berthold II and Dame Winfred continued the campaign to secure the throne of
Evendarr during the 10-year conclusion to the Succession War.
III. THE
SUCCESSION WAR
It
was during the Succession War that the practice was begun of forming a special
regiment charged with the personal safety of the King and/or Queen whenever the
Sovereign took the field. Made up of one
company from each of the five regiments in the King's Own, they were given the
designation of "Crown Guard".
As time went on and the number of Royal levies and mercenary units
swelled the Evendarrian forces to their maximum just before the Battle of the
Fire Downs in April of YR 16, the King's Own also began to be called "The
Old Guard", and the newer units became known as "The Royal Army"
or "The New Guard".
Although
the Royal Army was victorious over Valdric Dorsette
and the Pretenders to the throne at Fire Downs was decisive, losses among the
King's Own were monumental. Three full regiments were virtually wiped out, and
Dame Commander Winfred Bartholomew suffered her final death. Memorials were
built to the heroes of the battle at its site and on Royal Way in the capital
city of on Royal Way. A King built the Royal Way to allow for long, long
processions heading from one end of the City to the other. And though there are stairs on the sides of
the Royal Way here and there, the whole road is one long ramp so that horses
and carriages and such can make the journey with ease.. The remnants were gathered into a single
King's Own Regiment - again, with one exception.
The
3rd Sardonian Watch had escaped the Battle of the Fire Downs with relatively
few losses. Rumors of cowardice and collaboration with the enemy surfaced in
the wake of the battle, despite the fact that the 3rd Sardonian Watch had
successfully carried out its assignment of guarding the Evendarrian Wizards,
who were led by Lord Lawrance Huntington, Sir Aylward's younger brother.
After careful investigation, the 3rd Watch was not only exonerated by
the King himself, but were cited for bravery for the successful completion of
their mission. Nevertheless, the implied
stain upon the 3rd Sardonia Watch’s honor impelled its personnel to
resist full assimilation into the reformed King's Own Regiment, and the 3rd
Sardonian Watch retained a separate regimental status as the Second King's
Own. It was not until its extraordinary
heroism during the 1st Nordenn Campaign in YR 83 that full recognition of this
unit's loyal service to the Crown of Evendarr was universally acknowledged, and
its reputation was given a proper place in Kingdom history.
IV. EXPANSION
The
Holmgate Treaty of YR 80 united the Kingdoms of
Evendarr and Blackstone, nearly doubling the size of the Kingdom. Hender Blackstone
was given the dual titles of Prince Consort to Queen Cllotho
I and Count Regent of Blackstone, the latter rank to his Heirs in perpetuity,
in order to indicate that they would not be considered in the line of
succession to the Endarr throne. Since
County Blackstone was now to be in direct vassalage to the Evendarrian Heir,
most of Hender's troops remained on station. He brought one regiment of his personal guard
- the 1st Blackstone Guard - to Cwyll, and these
forces were added to the Queen's Own, serving with distinction in the Nordenn
Campaign a few years later.
In
YR 85, Queen Lorelei Donnavarras of Kitheria
petitioned to join the Kingdom in the wake of the Spotted Plague that had left
her Realm all but defenseless to attacks from the west and south. As part of the Kitherian Compact of that
year, she also sent a regiment of personal troops - the 5th Life Guard - to the
Evendarrian Queen, with the understanding that they would become incorporated
into the Queen's Own. Dame Lorelei would
remain in Kitheria as its first Duchess.
V.
REORGANIZATION
At
this point in time, Sir Edmund Pendarves of Greymoor
was Knight Commander of the Queen's Own.
Queen Cllotho's personal guard units were
facing something of an internal crisis, having nearly doubled in size in only a
few years. In addition, there were
troops which had been levied by the Crown from its own estates and those of its
vassals, as well as a number of mercenary forces who had seen service to
Evendarr almost continually since the beginning of the Succession War. A Royal Commission was formed under Sir
Edmund's capable leadership to effect a consolidation and reorganization of the
Kingdom's armed forces. The
reorganization took effect on New Year's Day of YR 88.
The
entirety of the Queen's Own was redesignated the
Crown Guard. The last surviving regiment
of the Founding was officially given the name it had been affectionately called
for decades: the 1st Old Guard. The 2nd
Queen's Own - the former 3rd Sardonian Watch - became the 2nd Crown Guard. The troops of Blackstone and Kitheria were
granted the 4th and 5th Crown Guard designations respectively.
The
former Crown Guard continued to consist of the Sovereign's traveling guard,
made up of one company of each of the other four regiments, and retained its
order in historical precedence as the 3rd Regiment. To this day the unit forms only when the King
or Queen travels outside of the Capital.
To
summarize, the old and new regimental designations became:
OLD NEW
1st King's/Queen's Own (YR 1) 1st Old Guard
2nd King's/Queen's Own (YR 16) 2nd Crown Guard
(Former 3rd Sardonian Watch - YR 6)
Crown Guard (temporary) (YR 6) 3rd Crown Guard
1st Blackstone Guard (YR 80) 4th Crown Guard
5th Kitherian Life Guard (YR 85) 5th Crown Guard
VI. OTHER
CROWN REGIMENTS
Only
two additional units with the same internal structure and permanent orders from
the Crown exist in Evendarr apart from the Crown Guard. The first is the 75th Assault Regiment that
has exclusively guarded the island of Janitria and
the Royal Academy of Arcane Arts & Sciences on Lake Hollym since YR
112. The second and last is the 6th
Greymoor Guard, which became the 1st Tactical Regiment, and has been
permanently stationed at Fort Ulson in Velowyn since
YR 393.
VII. THE
NORTHERN EXPANSION (YR 272 - 285)
In
normal cases, the Monarch will travel about the Kingdom guarded only by the 3rd
Crown Guard Regiment. In case of war, or
when one of the Crowns Knights or Commanders has reason, this is often
changed. When Ulson
III began his expedition to the North, he marched with three Crown Guard
Regiments at his back. In addition to
the 1st, 4th and 5th Crown Guard, Ulson brought fully
twenty Regiments of the line with him; only eight were to return. Six were destroyed outright, and the
remainders were so badly damaged that they were useful only as cadre troops for
newly forming Regiments.
Lined
up along the banks of the Green River in Rotaria, Ulson's
Regiments swept across the lands that would become Ashbury, Niman, southern
Ravenholt and southern Volta. Although
the initial movement, from end to end, took but two campaign seasons, the
pacification lasted considerably longer.
Ulson's initial movements were swift, owing mainly to shock
on the part of his adversaries. The Army
of the North, as it would be called, numbered over twenty thousand troops when
the Campaign began, and no force could stand against them in the early days. Ulson's leading
Brigades, each made up of three Regiments of light cavalry, scattered Goblins,
Northmen and Hadrani alike in the first two years, clearing the way for the
slower heavy cavalry and infantry.
At
the start of the year 274, Ulson began to split his
forces into Brigade-sized maneuver elements, with the intent of defeating his
enemies and clearing the land for settlers.
The Regiments were reorganized to pair cavalry with pikes or archers for
support, and the pacification began.
While
the Brigades moved to their stations and began to engage the Goblins and
Northmen in open battle, Ulson and his Crown Guards
found themselves beset by Hadrani raiders.
The Guard, each Regiment supported by a full Company of the 75th
Assault, performed admirably against the seemingly endless light horsemen of
the Plains, although in the end several maneuver Brigades had to be recalled to
help deal with the problem.
This
repositioning caused delays in the other operations, forcing the remaining
Brigades to cover larger areas during 274 and 275. Fighting was especially bitter in the Tower
Hills, just north of the Ash Forest, where elements of the 2nd and 7th Brigades
suffered heavy losses, including the decimation of the 31st Pikes, at the hands
of the Wolf and Bear Clans of the Snake Nation in the spring of 275.
During
275 and 276, the 1st Brigade sparred with large tribes of Goblins and Orcs,
moving as far north as Lake Ardynn in the summer
before retreating behind the Ashbury River in the winter. With the reduction in raiding by the Hadrani
at the end of 275 ER, presumably because of horrific losses inflicted by the
Guard, the 4th Brigade was moved to support the 1st during 276 ER. At the
beginning of 277 ER a surprise offensive by the 4th broke the tribes, allowing
the 1st Brigade to move to the Tower Hills in support of the 2nd and 7th
Brigades.
The
winter of 277 ER saw another realignment of the Regiments, with the cavalry and
infantry once again being segregated.
The 1st and 2nd Brigades, now entirely cavalry, were placed in what
would become Nordenn and Trellheim, respectively, while the infantry of the
3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th brigades were sent into the Tower Hills to rout out the
Northmen. At this point, an entire
Regiment (the 31st Pikes) had been destroyed, and the others had taken such
losses that even with reinforcements from the south, another Regiment (the 7th
Pikes) was broken up to bring the others up to full strength.
From
277 to 281 ER, the infantry Brigades ranged the Hills, moving as far north as
the newly named Blood River (on whose banks several major battles were fought)
in search of the Northmen. In 278,
during the battle which named the Blood River, two Regiments, the 18th Pikes
and the 5th Archers, were destroyed in an encounter which saw the full strength
of three Brigades face the might of the Snake Nation over a period of six
days.
In
the end, the Northmen retreated, ceding the territory of Ashbury to the Kingdom
by default after seeing thousands of warriors die, many permanently. This would not occur until 282 ER, however,
and in the meantime many Royal troops would join the Northmen in death.
Meanwhile,
279 ER saw an increase in Hadrani raids into Niman. This time, however, there
would be no realignment of troops, since the Guard was more than capable of
repelling the attacks. These attacks
continued until 284 ER, when they fell in frequency and ferocity yet
again. This cycle of increasing and
decreasing attacks continues even to the present, as the Hadrani refuse to
concede that the Kingdom had defeated them.
During
278 and 279, the Goblin tribes remained quiet, rebuilding their numbers and
preparing for a final assault. The
spring of 280 began quietly, and the Royal forces thought that the rebuilding
would continue. June put the lie to
that, as numberless hordes of Goblins came south, rounding Lake Ardynn on both sides and sorely pressing the 2nd Brigade
until more troops could arrive. While
the 1st and 4th Brigades arrived quickly, they could not prevent the total
destruction of the 4th Lancers and the mauling of the 7th Dragoons. With these reinforcements, the Royal Army not
only held, but counterattacked and chased the remnants of the Goblins as far as
the Northern Downs before the winter weather forced a retreat to the south.
By
the spring of 284, organized resistance had ceased, and only fitful attacks
disturbed the peace in Ashbury. The
Hadrani raiders continued to keep the Guard alert, but even this could not keep
a feeling of victory from sweeping the Army of the North.
After
the winter of 284, Ulson took the bulk of his army
back to Evendarr, leaving garrison forces that were quickly replaced or
reinforced by fresh troops from elsewhere in the Kingdom. Ulson's battered
Regiments were sent off to quieter postings, where they recovered and rebuilt
as well as they could. After 13 years,
they had completed their mission and begun the process that would eventually
create two new Duchies. In 305, Lord
Xavier Saxony was named the Lord Protector of Ashbury, but it would take nearly
two additional centuries before either Ashbury or Niman achieved Ducal status.

VIII. THE
MODERN ARMY OF EVENDARR
ROYAL COMMAND
STRUCTURE (RCS)
After
the King or Queen, when acting as "Marshal of the Armies of
Evendarr", as either a Field Marshal operating as the day-to-day
commander, or a General acting as Chief of Staff. Next down, regardless of the presence of a
Field Marshal, is the Royal Command Staff.
RCS
will consist of Brigadiers (with several supporting officers and NCO’s each) in charge of the following functions:
Intelligence, Logistics, Training, Theory, Special Operations. In addition, there will be a number of
Brigadiers attached to RCS for other reasons.
Most of these are being groomed for Theater or Function commands, or are
Liaison officers from the Navy or allied Kingdoms.
RCS
also has several associated units. These
are the Siege Commands, groups of officers and senior NCO’s
whose training is in Siege Operations.
Sufficient personnel exist to completely replace the staff of several
Regiments, although they would likely be spread more thinly in actual practice.
At
the same approximate level as RCS are the Theater Generals, the actual
commanders of troops in the field. The
four Theaters, plus the Royal Guard, report to the King or Field Marshal
through RCS, but are not actually under the authority of RCS.
Note: Liaison Officers are
referred to by the titles granted them in their homelands, but for purposes of
precedence, they are considered to be equal to Evendarrian Brigadiers. In the case of the Navy, the Liaison officer
is a Commodore, whose equivalent rank is Brigadier in any case.
TABLE OF DISTRIBUTION
The
basic command structure of the Royal Army is as follows:
COMMANDER UNIT
Regular Special
Marshal of the Armies (Sovereign) All -----
or Field Marshal
General
Theater Royal
Guard
Brigadier
Brigade Regiment
Major
Regiment Battalion
Captain
Company Company
Lieutenant Banner Banner
Companies
generally consist of approximately 150 troops.
Regiments are composed of 4 or 5 companies. The exceptions are the Crown Guard and the
special units, which may contain several companies in a battalion
structure. In addition, lower-ranking
officers may command larger units as acting officers of a higher rank, should
the need arise.
The
smallest real unit is the Company.
Banners are used if, for example, a Company needs to secure a town or
small city, and needs to split up. In a
field battle this would never be done, since a Banner is too small to defend
itself and too large to run effectively.
It is also too small to justify its own Elementals for communications
duty.
TRAINING COMMAND
Basic
training centers for the regular Army units are scattered throughout the
Kingdom of Evendarr. The largest land
training camps are at Reynard in Sardonia and Burnfeld in Endarr, Duchy of Evendarr; as well as at Almada in Zyr, Duchy of
Kitheria.
All
of the special units listed below are entitled to recruit independently of the
regular Armed Forces, and to conduct their training internally at their own
centers.
These
are:
1. The Crown Guard (Evendarr City)
The
history of the Crown Guard regiments has been detailed elsewhere. These are "old-style" regiments and
include the intermediate battalion category.
They consist of 9 companies of 150 troops each, a complement of 1350
personnel per regiment, or 5400 in total for the four, plus officers.
The
mission of the Crown Guard is extensive, and predates the Kingdom itself. It is charged with ensuring the safety of the
Sovereign, the Royal Family, the Court and the Capital apart from the City
Watch. It provides escort and security
for visiting dignitaries, participates in all Royal Ceremonies and screens
visitors to Castle Evendarr. The Guard
also acts as Crown Couriers, performs special missions and such duties as the
Liege may require, and may act in an advisory capacity in certain
situations. It is in constant training,
and both personnel and units of the Guard may be found in any of the special
training centers throughout the Kingdom.
The Crown Guard also staffs and administers the Royal College of
Chivalry.
The
exception is the 3rd Crown Guard, which is formed whenever the Sovereign
departs the Capital. It is made up of
one company from each of the other four Crown Regiments, about 600 in total. However, the 3rd Crown is also empowered to
appropriate whatever support and logistics it may require to achieve its
mission.
2. Marines (HQ Command, Royal Marines, Braughm-Raor,
County of Blackstone)
The
Royal Marines were originally founded as a special force in 210 by General Deneb Warwyck of Rotaria during
the campaign in the lands that would eventually bear his name, The Duchy of
Rotaria. They were so successful that in 212 they were made permanent units
attached to the Crown itself, and their training center was relocated to an
expanded facility at Braughm-Raor in County Blackstone.
Since
there was no Royal Navy at the time, the Marines would be detached to temporary
duty at the request of the coastal Duchies, who were only too happy to bear the
additional levies in exchange for the Marines' superior capabilities against
pirates and the monsters of the ocean.
When the Royal Navy was founded in 503 by Queen Lorelei, many of the
facilities at Braughm-Raor became jointly administered, although the Marines
remained part of the Royal Army.
The
Royal Marines are made up of 5 regiments of 4 companies each, for a total of
3000 personnel per Duchy. They are
assigned duty stations among the Duchies of Evendarr as needed. Each of the
Duchies educates Marines in warfare, and military tactics and they serve in the
field, under Royal or Ducal Command, for 3 months at a time, with many weekends
and fully 3 months off between services.
3. The 1st Tactical Regiment (Fort Ulson the Conqueror, in the estate of Velowyn, Duchy of
Evendarr)
Its commander since 587 is
Brigadier Lord Inoro Shakamatsu,
formerly of Draelonde.
An "old-style"
assault-type regiment in structure, it was founded in 393 by Queen Katherine in
the aftermath of the 3rd Saxony Rebellion.
Formerly the 6th Greymoor Guard, it remains the only unit in the Royal
Army with its unique Royal commission: to study the strategies and tactics of
the enemy, and to act as the "enemy" in training exercises and war
games with regular units. It consists of
3 battalions of 3 companies each, for a total of 1350 personnel. It is rarely bested in combat exercises and
then only by the units of the Crown Guard and the 75th Assault. They often
enlist the aid of Adventurers in the local area to perform military tasks.
The
1st Tactical is also charged with developing strategic and tactical manuals for
the regular Army. In addition, it trains
personnel in guerilla operations, infiltration, sabotage and espionage
missions.
4. Mountain Units (Ford Deneb
Warwyck, Icemoor, Duchy of
Volta)
Fort
Deneb was founded in 512 ER with units of the Royal
Army who had the appropriate mountainous background. Training of the Mountain regiments began with
the newly organized 86th, which was detached to Duke Argent Bearslayer
for the pacification of the Dinsdale Barbarians called
"Highlanders". Due to the high
attrition rate suffered by its hazardous missions, it was reorganized as the
1st Mountain Brigade under the command of Brigadier Rutherford
Rawlings in 576, and was used extensively in the
punitive expeditions sent against them after the assassination of Duke Argent
II in 584. Later, the 3rd and 4th
Mountain Regiments were added, as raids from Northmen and other monsters
continued to persist.
The
Mountain units specialize in training for climate and terrain tactics and
strategy, guerilla operations and combat against undead. The 1st Mountain contains 5 companies and the
two Regiments have 3 apiece, for a total of 1650 personnel.
There
are always companies out on patrol rotation or on stand-down at New Castle
Keep, regardless of the season. Although
several units may be temporarily attached for training at any given time, there
are never more than 1500 troops in residence at the fort itself, since the harsh
conditions prevent a larger standing population.
5. 75th Assault Regiment (Royal Academy, Janitria, Lake Hollym)
The
75th Assault Regiment is unique among Royal Army units in that every recruit is
required to learn spell-casting in addition to their other skills. With the dedication of the Royal Academy in
112 ER, it was decided that a permanent guard force would be necessary to
safeguard the island and its residents.
As time went on, that mission was expanded to include a containment
capacity as well. The Assault regiment,
recently devised and not yet tested in battle, was chosen as the optimal type
for this task, and the 75th was the first of its class.
While
the 75th has been involved in few engagements, and never to its full strength,
the concept of the Assault regiment is now well proven. As the oldest and most intensively trained,
the 75th is regarded as the most dangerous of the Assault regiments, in
addition to being the largest. Made up
of nine companies divided into three battalions for a total personnel
complement of 1350, the 75th uses the "old-style" structure similar
to that of the Crown Guard and the 1st Tactical.
Unlike
normal regiments, the 75th may not be employed for any purpose other than the
defense of the Academy without a unanimous vote of the Regents. For this reason, the training of the 75th has
been more theoretical than practical.
The
current commander of the 75th Assault Regiment is Brigadier Morran
Bartholomew-Saneth, who has held his post since 585.

Two
additional Regiments exist, and have special command chains. The 75th Royal Assault, technically under the
Central Command, in fact follows the orders of the Royal Academy. The 1st Tactical Regiment is directly under
the authority of the Central Command, but by tradition is never moved from its
home at Fort Ulson in the Duchy of Evendarr. In total, the Royal Army consists of 39
Regiments, with a total of nearly 29,000 soldiers. In time of war, the influx of militia Foot
will swell this number to almost 120,000 troops.
Aside
from the forces of the Crown, each Principality controls eight Regiments, as
follows:
1
Lancer
1
Dragoon
1
Pike
1
Archer
4
Foot
According to the Principality Act, these units are in fact Regiments of the Royal Army which are seconded to Principality control for day-to-day operations. In the case of Southwatch, these forces fall under the Royal chain of command, by the direct order of Miles Tegg. Each Principality then commands just over 5,000 troops, with a wartime maximum of nearly 21,000. Should the entire Kingdom go to war, the Crown and Princes combined would command several hundred thousand Troops, in addition to Baronial and Ducal levies, and over fifty thousand seasoned adventurers.
